There are as many treatments as there are types of acne.

The treatments range from domestic and natural remedies to complicated surgical remedies. Though the most commonly used remedies for acne treatment are the natural acne treatments, there are instances where these natural cures fail to work.

In such cases, you need to opt for chemical or medicinal acne treatment. Though homemade acne treatments are effective for mild problem, they are not much of a help in severe cystic acne treatment.

In such cases, there is a need for a chemical anti-oxidant or anti-microbial medicine that can effect from inside and also help preventing future acne problems.

These acne medicines can be obtained over the counter or through prescriptions written by qualified professionals.

Over the counter treatments involve topical products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and other herbal products that can be applied on the affected area.

Benzoyl peroxide helps in removing acne and preventing further infection. It is available in lotion and gel form. Salicylic acid on the other hand helps in unclogging the pores and reducing inflammation.

Some other options such as sulfur and retinoid are known for being efficacious in reducing acne as well as inflammation. The other option available for more severe kind of acne is prescription treatment that requires consultation with physicians and dermatologists.

These prescription treatments can be divided into oral antibiotics, oral contraceptives, applicable antimicrobials and applicable retinoid. These drugs help in killing bacteria, unclogging pores, control bacterial growth and suppress sebaceous glands respectively and prevent worsening of the acne.

The selection of cures depends upon the severity of problem as well as skin type of the person with acne. Most of their remedies strike the root of acne problem and help in preventing future infection.

Some of the remedies are also known to have anti-inflammation and cooling effect. However, you need to know that different treatments have different effect.

Also not all treatments are expected to show results in same time as different people respond differently to same medicines depending upon their skin types and their levels of immunity.
